.lumen is in the final testing stages of its AI-powered Glasses for the Blind.
Romanian tech start-up .lumen, known for pushing innovation boundaries is one step closer to releasing smart glasses for the visually impaired.
In July, .lumen secured over $6.6 million in funding to advance its Pedestrian Autonomous Driving (PAD AI) glasses, which mimic the functionality of guide dogs.
“The glasses are designed to replicate the features of a guide dog. If a guide dog pulls your hand to lead you in the right direction to keep you safe, the glasses will gently pull your head.”
.lumen Founder Cornel Amariei
The innovative glasses provide intuitive navigation using AI-powered environmental awareness, offering visually impaired users a safer way to navigate complex surroundings.
Limited prototypes have been tested across 20 countries, successfully guiding over 250 individuals through challenging environments.
With only 28,000 working guide dogs worldwide and the visually impaired population expected to reach 500 million by 2050, tech-driven solutions like .lumen’s glasses are crucial.
For Amariei, this mission is deeply personal. Growing up as the only non-disabled member in his family, he understands the importance of creating a reliable assistive device.
“Every pair of .lumen glasses is more than just a device – it’s a lifeline that needs to work flawlessly.”

The company aims to launch the glasses in European markets by mid-2025, with plans to enter the US market by the year’s end.
Their current goal is to sell 10,000 units by 2026, empowering the visually impaired to lead more independent lives.
