The $4.65 Million Donation You Should Give A Crap About

Social enterprise Who Gives A Crap makes another whopping donation to build toilets and provide clean drinking water worldwide.

Who Gives A Crap has announced a $4.65 million donation to support global access to clean water and sanitation, reinforcing its mission to improve basic hygiene worldwide.

The Melbourne-born brand has now donated a total of $18 million toward its purpose of providing clean water and toilets to underserved communities.

Founded in 2012, the company sells eco-friendly toilet paper and allocates 50% of its profits to fund sanitation initiatives. In 2023 alone, it helped over 845,000 people gain access to essential hygiene services.

Poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water cause 1.4 million deaths annually. Tackling these urgent issues is central to Who Gives A Crap’s mission.

“Everyone deserves access to clean water and a toilet. Everyone. I’d like to shout out to all of our customers who have welcomed us into their bathrooms over the years, and who have helped us deliver real impact through the incredible work our impact partners do.”

Who Gives A Crap CEO and Co-Founder Simon Griffiths

Partnerships with nonprofits like WaterAid Australia, Water For People, and Fresh Life have played a key role in the company’s ability to create lasting change. The brand’s social impact has earned it recognition from Forbes as Australia’s top corporate giver by percentage of profits.

The profit-for-purpose business model is something Griffiths hopes will inspire other companies.

“Imagine a world where even more brands donated a significant chunk of their profits to help solve huge social issues.”

The recent $4.65 million contribution marks the second-largest donation in the company’s history, following a $5.85 million donation in 2020.

Earlier this year, Who Gives A Crap expanded its presence in the US, securing retail partnerships with Whole Foods Market and Erewhon Markets. Its products are now available in stores and online across 40 global markets.
